AbstractIn order to assess the annual rate of shallow cut deforestation in the Brazilian Amazonia, INPE (Brazilian National Institute for Space Research) uses PRODES (Project for the Satellite Monitoring of the Brazilian Amazon Forest) system. PRODES database can be accessed from INPE website, which enables further studies on deforestation patterns in different subsets of such a heterogeneous region. The present study focuses on simulating the spatial dynamics of deforestation state of Roraima, in the far north of the Brazilian Amazon, using PRODES database and a cellular automata model within a time span of five years (2000-2005). The cellular automaton (CA) platform DINAMICA EGO was used in this study. It is driven by landscape maps from the initial and final time of the simulation period and by spatial variables (dynamic and/or static). The landscape maps contained the following land cover classes: forest, non-forest, deforestation, drainage, and background. The spatial variables selected for the analysis were distance to roads, distance to urban sites, and distance to deforested areas. The results indicated that the transition forest to deforestation was more strongly associated with the variables distance to deforestation and distance to roads and presented though a weak relation with distance to urban sites. The results shed light on the drivers of land cover change processes in this region, mainly the conversion from forest to deforested areas, indicating the minor role of urban sites as compared to the decisive importance of roads and previously deforested areas.
